1. Project Background

Our client is a startup focusing on the design and sales of personalized computer peripherals. They aim to launch a series of custom mechanical keyboards with distinctive appearances on the market. The keyboard case, as the most intuitive part of the product’s appearance, needs to have both aesthetic appeal and structural stability. After comparing various manufacturing processes, they chose 3D printing technology to achieve the rapid prototyping and small – batch production of this yellow – themed custom keyboard case, and entrusted us to complete this project.

2. 3D Printing Challenges

  1. Appearance Aesthetics: The keyboard case has a bright color matching design, with yellow as the main color and contrasting black and white key positions. It is necessary to ensure the uniformity of the 3D printed product’s color and the smoothness of the surface to meet the high – end and beautiful positioning of the product.
  2. Structural Complexity: Inside the keyboard case, there are precise slot structures for installing the keyboard circuit board, key switches, etc. These structures require high dimensional accuracy to ensure the smooth assembly of subsequent components and the normal operation of the keyboard.
  3. Material Performance: The keyboard case needs to have a certain degree of strength and impact resistance to protect the internal components. At the same time, it should also have good hand – feeling characteristics, and the material selection and post – processing of 3D printing need to take these factors into account.

(1) 3D Printing Process Planning

  1. Model Design and Optimization: First, we use professional 3D modeling software to convert the client’s creative design of the keyboard case into a 3D digital model. Then, we optimize the model for 3D printing, such as reasonably designing the wall thickness of the case, the arrangement of internal support structures, etc., to ensure the success rate of printing and the stability of the product structure.
  2. Material Selection: After comprehensive consideration, we choose a high – quality, high – strength plastic material suitable for 3D printing. This material has good colorability, can present a bright yellow effect, and has excellent mechanical properties to ensure the durability of the keyboard case.
  3. 3D Printing Operation: We use advanced FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printing technology. During the printing process, we precisely control parameters such as printing temperature, printing speed, and layer thickness. The printing temperature is set according to the material characteristics to ensure good fusion of the printing layers; the printing speed is adjusted to balance printing efficiency and product quality; and the appropriate layer thickness is selected to ensure the surface smoothness and dimensional accuracy of the keyboard case.

(2) Post – processing

  1. Support Removal and Deburring: After the 3D printing is completed, we first carefully remove the internal support structures of the keyboard case. Then, we use professional tools and processes to deburr the edges and surfaces of the case to ensure that the surface of the case is smooth and free of burrs, providing a good foundation for subsequent processing.
  2. Surface Treatment and Coloring: In order to enhance the surface texture and color fastness of the keyboard case, we carry out surface treatment processes such as sandblasting and polishing. Then, we use a professional coloring process to uniformly apply the yellow color to the case, and perform color fixing treatment to ensure that the color is bright and durable, and can maintain good appearance characteristics for a long time.

(3) Quality Control

  1. Printing Process Monitoring: During the 3D printing process, we use an online monitoring system to monitor parameters such as printing temperature, printing speed, and material consumption in real – time. Once an abnormality is detected, we can immediately adjust or stop the printing to ensure the stability of the printing process and the quality of the printed product.
  2. Finished Product Inspection: After the post – processing is completed, we conduct a comprehensive quality inspection of the keyboard case. We use precision measuring tools to detect the dimensional accuracy of the case, including the size of the internal slots, the overall dimensions of the case, etc., to ensure that it meets the design requirements. At the same time, we also conduct visual inspections and hand – feeling evaluations of the appearance and surface quality of the case to ensure that the product quality meets the high standards expected by the client.

4. Project Achievements

Through our professional 3D printing technology and strict quality control, we successfully completed the production of this custom mechanical keyboard case.
